easyJet will transform Southend Airport in time for London 2012

Making a quick getaway from Southend to popular holiday destinations across Europe is about to get a lot easier!

easyJet, one of Europe's most popular budget airlines, will start operating at London Southend Airport in Essex from April next year - just in time for the Summer 2012 Olympics.

With 70 easyJet flights per week and a choice of around 10 different European destinations - including Barcelona, Ibiza and Faro - around 800,000 tourists and business passengers are expected to fly in the first year.

This summer London Southend Airport opens a dedicated railway station with up to eight services an hour to Stratford - site of the 2012 Olympic Games - and to London Liverpool Street, both in well under an hour. Passengers will be able to get from the plane to the train in 15 minutes.

A new terminal building at the airport is also due to be completed this autumn, and a new hotel opens in 2012.

"London Southend Airport is in a fantastic location just outside London with a fast rail link into the city," says Catherine Lynn, easyJet’s Customer Director. "We believe that the European city links will attract a high number of business and leisure passengers."

easyJet tickets will go on sale at the end of July.
